Authorised in 1880, the line reached Rickmansworth on 1 September 1887, and for two years the station was the terminus of the Metropolitan Railway’s extension from Pinner before tracks continued to Chesham in 1889. From 1898 it was shared with the Great Central Railway. Electric trains arrived on 5 January 1925, which moved the change of locomotives here: north of Rickmansworth, steam haulage was provided by the LNER. The same year a platform was added at the south end of the station for a shuttle to Watford.

Pre-war plans to electrify on to Aylesbury were postponed when the Second World War broke out, and the Watford shuttle ended along with steam, the last steam train running on 10 September 1961. A token shuttle returned in 1987, with one train each way early and late in the day, later extended to Amersham when S8 Stock arrived. The old bay platform is now severed and unused. Two tracks pass through the station, shared in both directions by Underground and Chiltern Railways trains, and a signal cabin here controls signals around Rickmansworth and Watford. Thanks to the nearby sidings, many evening Metropolitan line trains terminate here.
