No stop on the Underground stands higher: Amersham’s platforms are 147 m above sea level, loftier than the Big Ben tower. The station is also a long way out, 23.7 miles from Charing Cross, which makes it the second-furthest Underground station from central London after Chesham. It opened on 1 September 1892 when the Metropolitan Railway extended from Chalfont Road, today’s Chalfont & Latimer, towards Aylesbury. From 16 March 1899 Great Central Railway trains to Marylebone called as well, and the station became jointly owned by the two companies. Between 1922 and 1934 it carried the longer name Amersham & Chesham Bois.

Electric trains reached Amersham on 12 September 1960, when the tracks from Rickmansworth were electrified, partly completing plans first proposed about thirty years before; the A60 stock ordered for that scheme was named after the town. Today it is a terminus of the Metropolitan line and a stop on the London–Aylesbury line, with Chiltern Railways running the main-line services since 1996. Since December 2010 the Metropolitan off-peak service has been split evenly between Amersham and Chesham.
