About Chesham station
No Underground station is further from central London: Chesham lies 25 miles north-west of Charing Cross and is both the northernmost and westernmost station in the system. The Metropolitan Railway opened it on 8 July 1889 as a temporary terminus on its way north from Rickmansworth, intending to continue to Tring and the West Coast Main Line. The company chose a route via Aylesbury instead, so Chesham became the end of a branch, and although it went on buying land towards Tring the line never went further. The 3.89 miles from Chalfont & Latimer is the longest gap between adjacent stations on the network.
The buildings have changed little since. The station, signal box and water tower form an intact group, and the listing describes it as the most complete surviving late-19th-century rural Metropolitan station; it is Grade II listed. The goods yard closed in July 1966, and a bay platform added at electrification closed in November 1970. For the branch’s 125th anniversary, on 16 and 17 August 2014, the steam locomotive Metropolitan 1 ran specials from Rickmansworth.
