Out in Buckinghamshire, the Metropolitan line opened this station on 8 July 1889 as Chalfont Road; it took the double name Chalfont & Latimer on 1 November 1915. For decades Metropolitan trains were steam-hauled beyond Rickmansworth, swapping to an electric locomotive there, until electrification to Amersham and Chesham was completed in 1960; steam was finally withdrawn in 1961. The goods yard closed on 14 November 1966.

The station lies just before the junction for Chesham. Until December 2010 that branch was worked mostly by a four-car shuttle from the bay platform here; since 12 December 2010 eight-car trains have run through instead. Chiltern Railways trains between Marylebone and Aylesbury also call. On the southbound platform stands one of the few surviving K8 telephone kiosks, now used for TfL’s internal system and Grade II listed. On 21 June 2020 a Chiltern train passed a signal at danger and stopped 23 m short of a tube train here; investigators found driver fatigue the likely cause.
