Chorleywood opened on 8 July 1889 under the two-word name Chorley Wood. From 1915 to 1934 it was Chorley Wood & Chenies, then plain Chorley Wood again until 1964, after which the single-word spelling took over. The village it serves lies in the Three Rivers district of Hertfordshire, about 20 miles (32 km) from London.

For decades the Metropolitan line here was steam-hauled, with trains from Aylesbury changing to an electric locomotive at Rickmansworth. Steam was withdrawn in 1961, once electrification north to Amersham and Chesham was complete; A60 and A62 Stock then worked the line until 2012, when S8 Stock replaced them. The station’s two platforms are shared with Chiltern Railways, whose diesel trains run between London Marylebone and Aylesbury. On Platform 2 stands one of the few surviving K8 telephone kiosks, Grade II listed and now used for TfL’s internal system.
