Metropolitan Railway trains had been running through since the extension from Pinner to Rickmansworth opened in 1887, and Great Central Railway trains since 1899, but there was no station here until 9 May 1910. It was first called Sandy Lodge, after the Sandy Lodge Golf Course, became Moor Park & Sandy Lodge in 1923 to reflect the area it served, and took its present name in 1950. The line was electrified in 1925, the year the Watford branch opened, with electric trains running to Rickmansworth to exchange their traction for steam.

A complete rebuild in 1961 gave the station four platforms, two in each direction, with separate platforms for fast and slow services. British Rail and Network SouthEast trains stopped calling in 1993. Since the 2011 timetable, fast and semi-fast trains have run only at peak times: morning fast trains to Aldgate use platform 2, and evening ones towards Amersham or Chesham use platform 1, while every other service, all day at weekends included, uses platforms 3 and 4. Moor Park is also where the Metropolitan line divides, towards Rickmansworth on the main branch or Croxley on the Watford branch.
