Croxley opened on 2 November 1925 as Croxley Green, on the Metropolitan Railway’s extension to Watford, with lines connecting towards both Rickmansworth and Moor Park. The name soon caused confusion, because the LNWR had already opened a different Croxley Green station in 1912, so in 1949 it was shortened to Croxley.

It remains the only intermediate station on the Watford branch, between Watford and Moor Park. Regular shuttles to Rickmansworth were withdrawn in January 1960; they returned in 1987, but only as one early-morning and one late-evening working each way, and these were later extended to Amersham after the longer S8 Stock trains arrived.
