Planned by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway, the station was opened by the Great Northern Railway on 1 April 1872 as Torrington Park, on a branch of the line from Finsbury Park to Edgware via Highgate. The name kept growing: Torrington Park, Woodside until 1882, then Woodside Park for North Finchley until 1931, and finally the cumbersome Woodside Park and North Finchley for Woodside Garden Suburb until 1940.

From 1923 the line belonged to the London & North Eastern Railway, and the Northern Heights project of the late 1930s brought the High Barnet branch north of East Finchley into the Underground. Northern line trains began calling in April 1940, and after a period served by both operators, LNER trains ended in 1941; British Railways freight continued to use the goods yard until 1 October 1962. The station still retains much of its original Victorian architectural character. On 10 December 1992 the Provisional IRA exploded a bomb in its car park during the afternoon rush hour; people were evacuated and no one was injured. Alphabetically, Woodside Park is the last station on the Underground.
