Built for the new housing spreading across this part of Finchley, the station was opened by the London & North Eastern Railway on 1 March 1933 on its line to High Barnet. The LNER kept the structures modest from the outset and furnished it with second-hand fittings taken from stations in the north of England. The footbridge is often said to have come from Wintersett and Ryhill on the Barnsley Coal Railway in Yorkshire, closed in 1930, although that bridge looks different, and Jago Hazzard has suggested it really came from the next station on that line, Notton and Royston.

The Underground took over through the Northern Heights project of the late 1930s, which absorbed the High Barnet branch north of East Finchley. Northern line trains first called on 14 April 1940; for a while both operators served the station, until LNER trains ended in 1941.

Frequently asked questions

It was second-hand, like many of the station’s fittings, which the LNER brought from stations in the north of England. The usual story is that it came from Wintersett and Ryhill on the Barnsley Coal Railway, closed in 1930, but that footbridge looks different, and Jago Hazzard suggests it came from Notton and Royston instead.

No. The two platforms are not connected within the station, so you need to use the correct entrance for your direction of travel. Changing from one platform to the other means a journey of about 350 m via the street.
