The station opened on 22 August 1867 as East End, Finchley, on the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway’s line from Finsbury Park to Edgware, which the Great Northern Railway had bought the month before; it later took the name East Finchley. Under the 1935 Northern Heights project, never fully completed, the old station was demolished and rebuilt with four platforms on two islands, so that trains could run south to Highgate both on the surface and through new tunnels. Northern line trains arrived on 3 July 1939 and were extended to High Barnet on 14 April 1940; steam services from Highgate ended on 2 March 1941.

Charles Holden with L. H. Bucknell designed the Grade II listed building in an Art Deco/Streamline Moderne style influenced by European, particularly Dutch, architecture. Semi-circular glazed stairways rise to an enclosed bridge over the tracks, and above the main entrance kneels The Archer, a 10-foot (3.0 m) statue by Eric Aumonier of an archer who seems to have just released an arrow, commemorating Finchley’s hunting links with the Royal Forest of Enfield. The inner platforms now serve only trains running to or from Highgate Wood depot.

Frequently asked questions

The Archer is a 10-foot-tall (3.0 m) statue by Eric Aumonier of a kneeling archer, shown as if having just released an arrow. It dominates the main entrance and is visible from the platforms. It commemorates Finchley’s ancient association with hunting in the nearby Royal Forest of Enfield.
The 1930s rebuild for the Northern Heights project gave it two island platforms, so trains could run south to Highgate both on the old surface route and through the new tunnels. The surface part of the plan was never completed, and the inner platforms are now used only by trains entering or leaving service from Highgate Wood depot.
