The first Highgate opened on 22 August 1867 in a deep cutting dug out of Highgate Hill, on the line from Finsbury Park to Edgware that the Great Northern Railway had bought just before opening. A branch to Alexandra Palace followed in 1873, and in the 1880s the station was rebuilt around a central island platform. Under the Northern Heights project, Northern line tunnels were driven beneath it, and deep-level platforms opened on 19 January 1941, linked by escalators to a new concourse under the old station. They were built 490 feet (150 m) long for nine-car trains that never served Highgate, and in wartime they sheltered people from the bombing of London.

Much of the plan was never completed. The surface platforms last carried passenger trains on 3 July 1954, goods traffic ended in 1964, and the track through them was lifted in 1972. Charles Holden’s pre-war design for an entrance at the top of the hill, to have been topped by a statue of Dick Whittington and his cat, gave way in 1957 to a single upward-only escalator to a simple exit. One of the original station buildings survives as a private house, and on 2 May 2023 a fire broke out in the ground-level station.

Frequently asked questions

They still exist above the present station but are closed: they were last used in 1954 and the track was lifted by 1972. The stairs down to them are blocked off from public areas by a staff room, and the Parkland Walk along the old line bypasses the station site for safety reasons.
The deep-level platforms were built 490 feet (150 m) long for extra-long nine-car Northern line trains. Those trains were withdrawn at the start of the Second World War and never served Highgate, which ended up as the only station with deep-level platforms of that length.
