High Barnet began as a main-line terminus. Planned by the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway, it was opened by the Great Northern Railway on 1 April 1872 on the original site of the Barnet Fair, at the end of a branch of the line from Finsbury Park to Edgware via Highgate. An additional ticket hall opened in 1896, and from 1923 the line belonged to the London & North Eastern Railway. Under the Northern Heights project, Northern line trains first served the station on 14 April 1940, and after a period shared by both operators, LNER services ended in 1941. A bell cast by Mears and Stainbank in 1869, rung for departing steam trains since the station opened, was donated to Barnet Museum in 1940.

Freight lasted until the goods yard closed on 1 October 1962; the yard became the commuter car park. The station still keeps much of its Victorian character, with numerous platform buildings from before the London Transport era. A train crew accommodation block was built on part of the car park in 2008 and opened on 31 January 2010, and a covered entrance from the car park to platform one, with a ramp to platforms two and three, was completed in October 2009.
