About Totteridge & Whetstone station
The Edgware, Highgate and London Railway built this station, but it was the Great Northern Railway, which had taken that company over, that opened it as Totteridge on 1 April 1872. It stood on a branch off the line from Finsbury Park to Edgware via Highgate, and took its present double name in 1874. From 1923 the line belonged to the London and North Eastern Railway, until the Northern Heights project of the late 1930s brought it into the Underground. Northern line trains first called on 14 April 1940; LNER passenger services ended in 1941, and the goods yard, which closed on 1 October 1962, is now the car park.
The station keeps much of its Victorian architectural character. It sits on the north side of Totteridge Lane, just east of the Dollis Brook, the traditional boundary between Totteridge and Whetstone, so it is narrowly in Whetstone. Flights of stairs lead to the two platforms, so it is not wheelchair accessible. It is normally staffed only at peak times, and there are waiting rooms and a toilet on each platform.
