About West Hampstead station
The Metropolitan Railway opened West Hampstead on 30 June 1879 when it extended its tracks from Swiss Cottage, and for a few months this was the end of the branch, until trains continued to Willesden Green on 24 November. The first layout had two tracks with facing platforms, a booking office south of today’s surface building and separate stairs to each side. When the Great Central Railway’s extension displaced the Metropolitan northwards, those were replaced by an island platform overlapping the old up platform.
Stopping trains passed to the Bakerloo line on 20 November 1939, when it took over the Stanmore branch; the platform was then rebuilt in the Underground’s standard style, but the station building was kept. The Jubilee line inherited the stops on 1 May 1979, while Metropolitan trains run past on their own tracks either side without calling. The nearby Thameslink and Overground stations gained step-free access when rebuilt in 2011 and 2019 respectively, but the Underground station has not; £10 million towards it was secured from the 2023 approval of the O2 Centre redevelopment, and TfL said in July 2023 that it could become step-free, depending on available funding.

Station facilities
What is near West Hampstead station
West End Lane is the spine of the area, and the station stands on it between Broadhurst Gardens and Blackburn Road. A Marks & Spencer is about 60 m from the entrance and West Hampstead Farmers’ Market roughly 160 m away. The pavement outside the entrance is narrow, which matters for anyone walking between this station and the two others along the lane: the Overground’s Mildmay line station is about 100 m away and West Hampstead Thameslink about 200 m. Bus routes 139, 328 and C11 also serve the station.

Frequently asked questions
Three. The Jubilee line station on West End Lane is about 100 m from the London Overground’s Mildmay line station and about 200 m from West Hampstead Thameslink, each with its own entrance, so changing means a short walk on the street. A 2003 Chiltern Railways proposal for a single interchange is no longer possible because of development in the area.
No. They run through on their own tracks on either side of the Jubilee line. A few early-morning and late-night Metropolitan trains once called, but that ended when the connection between the two lines at Finchley Road was removed as part of the preparation for automatic operation of the Jubilee line.
