About Kilburn station
The Metropolitan Railway opened this station as Kilburn and Brondesbury on 24 November 1879, on its extension towards Willesden Green and eventually Harrow. Rising traffic led to the line being quadrupled, with four-track running between Finchley Road and Kilburn from 1913. Just beyond the station, a bridge carrying those tracks over Kilburn High Road still bears the words “METROPOLITAN RAILWAY” and the date 1914.
To relieve the bottleneck into Baker Street, the Bakerloo was extended to Stanmore, and Kilburn joined that branch on 20 November 1939, when it was extensively rebuilt; Metropolitan trains stopped calling on 7 December 1940. The present name came on 25 September 1950. Since 1 May 1979 the branch has been part of the Jubilee line, while Metropolitan trains run through without stopping. The 1930s building survives and was refurbished in 2005, when heritage features were kept and a lift was added to give step-free access from street to platform.
