When the Metropolitan Railway extended its line from a now-closed station at Swiss Cottage (not today’s Jubilee line station), Finchley Road opened on 30 June 1879. It was rebuilt in 1914 with its entrances worked into a new parade of shops. The platforms lie in a cutting under a single glass and metal canopy, and this is the northernmost station on the line below street level.

Congestion shaped the station’s later history. By the mid-1930s the two Metropolitan tracks between here and Baker Street could not cope, so new deep tube tunnels were bored between the two stations to take some of the traffic from the Stanmore branch. They opened on 20 November 1939, bringing Bakerloo trains to Finchley Road; those services passed to the Jubilee line when it began on 1 May 1979. The layout reflects this: Jubilee trains use the two inside tracks, platforms 2 and 3, and Metropolitan trains the two outside ones, platforms 1 and 4.
