A pub gave this station its name. The Swiss Tavern, built in 1803–4 and later renamed Swiss Cottage, stood nearby long before trains ran beneath the junction of Finchley Road, Avenue Road and College Crescent. The Tube station opened on 20 November 1939 on the new deep-level tunnel between Baker Street and Finchley Road, when the Metropolitan’s Stanmore services were handed to the Bakerloo line.

For less than a year it was half of a combined station. The Metropolitan line’s own sub-surface Swiss Cottage station sat alongside, with platforms 1 and 2 for the Metropolitan and 3 and 4 for the Bakerloo, until the Metropolitan side closed on 17 August 1940. Metropolitan trains still pass nearby without stopping. During the Blitz the station was used extensively as an air-raid shelter. On 1 May 1979 it passed, with St John’s Wood and the rest of the Stanmore branch, to the newly opened Jubilee line.
