Late-1938 tube maps showed this stop as Acacia Road, after the street on whose corner with Finchley Road it stands. By the time it opened, on 20 November 1939, it had become St John’s Wood, a station on a newly bored deep-level tunnel between Baker Street and Finchley Road that took the Metropolitan’s Stanmore services onto the Bakerloo line. It replaced two Metropolitan stations that had closed the day before: Marlborough Road, and Lord’s, which had itself been called St. John’s Wood Road and then St. John’s Wood. The Stanmore branch, and the station with it, moved to the Jubilee line on 1 May 1979.

Much of 1939 survives. The building, by Stanley Heaps, is Grade II listed, the platforms keep their original design with ceramic relief tiles by Harold Stabler (cleaned and replaced in 2006), and the up-lighters lining the escalator, lighting the way from street to platform, date from the opening. In March 2007 the station hosted an unusual experiment: harmless sulphur hexafluoride was released and tracked to learn how toxic gas might spread through the Underground in an attack, while trains kept running normally.
