About Putney Bridge station
The District Railway opened this station on 1 March 1880 as Putney Bridge & Fulham, at the end of its extension south from West Brompton. It remained the terminus until 1889, when the company built the Fulham Railway Bridge across the River Thames and carried the line on to the London and South Western Railway’s new East Putney station, where it connected with the L&SWR’s line to Wimbledon; services to Wimbledon began on 3 June 1889.
On 1 September 1902 the name became Putney Bridge & Hurlingham, referring to the nearby Hurlingham Park and the Hurlingham Club, and the current name followed in 1932. That name is a little misleading: the station is on the Fulham side of the Thames, a short distance from the north end of Putney Bridge, and not actually in Putney. An ornate yellow brick façade marks the entrance.
