Parsons Green opened on 1 March 1880, when the Metropolitan District Railway extended its line south from West Brompton to Putney Bridge. The station was designed by a Mr Clemence under the supervision of John Wolfe-Barry. For a period it also housed a train-operator depot, until those functions were transferred to Earl’s Court.

The route was once earmarked for something larger: Parsons Green was a proposed stop on the Chelsea–Hackney Line, now known as Crossrail 2, whose route was safeguarded in 1991 and again in 2007, with a new tunnel planned to branch off north of the station towards Victoria. The station’s darkest day came on 15 September 2017, at around 8:20 am, when an ISIL-inspired explosion on a train carriage injured 30 people; there were no fatalities. The attacker, Ahmed Hassan, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum of 34 years, and in 2019 a passenger, Lt. Col. Craig Palmer, received the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery for helping bring him to trial.
