For its first 72 years this station was Walham Green. The District Railway opened it on 1 March 1880 when it extended its line south from West Brompton to Putney Bridge, and it took its present name on 1 March 1952 after representations from the Fulham Chamber of Commerce. Football has shaped it from early on: in 1905 the original building was replaced by a new entrance designed by Harry W Ford to cope with crowds for the newly built Stamford Bridge stadium. That building, with its terracotta block facade, is now Grade II listed.

The tracks run in a cutting that was open to the sky until the Fulham Broadway Shopping Centre was built over it. The upgraded station, with a new ticket hall and step-free access, opened in 2003 with its entrance through the shopping centre, and “match day” staircases at the far end of the platform let football crowds bypass the main ticket hall. The old street building closed, keeping its original footbridge and many signs, and has since been a restaurant, a food hall and, from 2025, a pub. On the night of 21 May 2008 the station saw riots after Chelsea’s defeat in the Champions League Final.
