This is the Praed Street station, separate from the Paddington (H&C line) station north of the main-line terminus: the map shows them as one, but passengers change between the two through the main-line concourse. Its sub-surface half opened on 1 October 1868 as Paddington (Praed Street), on the Metropolitan Railway’s branch to Gloucester Road built for the Inner Circle, with two platforms in a cutting partly covered by a glazed roof, designed by the MR’s chief engineer John Fowler. His street building was replaced in 1914 by Charles W Clark’s design clad in white faïence blocks, now Grade II listed. ‘Praed Street’ was dropped from the name on 11 July 1947.

The deep-level platforms opened on 1 December 1913 as the temporary terminus of the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway’s extension from Edgware Road. They were built on a tight curve, and this was the first station on the Bakerloo line designed for escalators rather than lifts. The station has twice been hit by explosions: a Fenian bomb on 30 October 1883 injured 62 passengers, and German bombs on 13 October 1940 killed five people, with four more dying later. David Hamilton’s tiling from the 1984–1987 refurbishment draws on technical drawings by Marc Isambard Brunel, and a much larger Bakerloo ticket hall opened in September 2024.
