Leslie Green’s ox-blood red terracotta frontage marks this Edgware Road, opened on 15 June 1907 by the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway when it pushed north from its temporary terminus at Marylebone. For six years it was the end of the line. A 1908 plan to link it with the North West London Railway towards Cricklewood via Kilburn, which would have given the station a second pair of platforms, was rejected, and the tightly curved 890-metre extension to Paddington only opened on 1 December 1913.

The narrow building originally sat in a row of shops, but the buildings to its south were demolished in the 1960s for the Marylebone flyover, leaving it isolated on the north-east corner of the junction of Edgware Road, Harrow Road and Marylebone Road. Its old exit in Bell Street is no longer used and now houses offices for station managers. Lifts are the heart of the story: in 1983 London Transport proposed closing the station rather than spend more than £3 million replacing its 77-year-old lifts, until the GLC asked for a rethink, and between 25 May and 21 December 2013 it shut for lift maintenance.
