Warwick Avenue opened on 31 January 1915, when the Bakerloo line was extended from Paddington to Queen’s Park. For a time before the opening, the station was to be called Warrington Crescent, after one of the three streets at whose junction it sits.

There is no surface building at all. Two sets of steps lead down to a sub-surface ticket hall, and the station was one of the first on the Underground built specifically to use escalators rather than lifts. Overnight on 17 September 1985 a fire destroyed the ticket hall and its ticket machines, and the station stayed closed for the day.
