About Park Royal station
The first station here, Park Royal & Twyford Abbey, opened on 23 June 1903 with the District Railway’s extension to South Harrow, a short distance north of today’s site, to serve the Royal Agricultural Society’s recently opened Park Royal show grounds. It was replaced on 6 July 1931 by the current station, built for the extension of Piccadilly line services over the District tracks; a temporary timber structure came first and the permanent building opened in 1936.
Welch & Lander designed it in an Art Deco/Streamline Moderne style influenced by Charles Holden: simple interconnecting geometric shapes in plain red brick, accented with strong horizontal and vertical glazing. A large circular ticket hall with high-level windows leads to the platform stairs, whose glazed enclosures form cascades of steps, and a tall square tower bearing the roundel locates the station from some distance. Two curved three-storey retail and office buildings in the same style stand across the small open space of Hanger Green. From 1936 to 1947 the name gained the suffix (Hanger Hill), after a residential estate next to the station. The platforms run on a continuous significant gradient, sloping up from south to north.
