The District Railway opened North Ealing on 23 June 1903 on its new extension from north of Ealing Common to Park Royal & Twyford Abbey, which served the Royal Agricultural Society’s recently opened show grounds; the line opened fully to South Harrow on 28 June 1903. Together with the existing tracks between Ealing Common and Acton Town, this was the first section of the Underground’s surface lines to be electrified and run electric instead of steam trains.

On 4 July 1932 the Piccadilly line was extended west of Hammersmith and replaced the District beyond Ealing Common. North Ealing was the only station on the South Harrow branch not rebuilt in the Holden style for the new service, so it keeps a slightly rural air; a 1930s substation in the brick and concrete style of the period stands beside the eastbound platform. The name is a little misleading, as the station lies east of Ealing Broadway, and areas such as Gurnell, Pitshanger and Hanger Hill fit the description better.

Frequently asked questions

When the Piccadilly line took over the South Harrow branch from the District in 1932, its stations were rebuilt in the “Holden” style. North Ealing was the only one on the branch that was not, so it keeps much of its 1903 character and a slightly rural air.

Not really. Despite the name, the station lies to the east of Ealing Broadway, near Hanger Lane. Areas such as Gurnell, Pitshanger, Montpelier and Hanger Hill are more geographically suited to the term “North Ealing”, and a primary school in Pitshanger carries that name.
