Ealing Common opened with the District Railway’s extension from Turnham Green to Ealing Broadway on 1 July 1879, and from 1886 until 1 March 1910 it was known as Ealing Common and West Acton. On 23 June 1903 a branch opened northwards from here, reaching Park Royal & Twyford Abbey and then, five days later, South Harrow. Together with the tracks between Ealing Common and Acton Town, it was the first section of the Underground’s surface lines to run electric trains instead of steam.

Charles Holden’s Portland stone building, opened on 1 March 1931, recalls his 1926 Morden extension stations, with a tall heptagonal ticket hall glazed on every side; it is very similar to Hounslow West, rebuilt at the same time. From 4 July 1932 the Piccadilly line took over the branch to South Harrow, and District trains west of here have since run only to Ealing Broadway. Ealing Common Depot lies beside the station, and many trains leaving it enter service here in the early morning; two sidings east of platform two, behind a cement wall, are used for shunting within the depot.
