About Hounslow West station
As Hounslow Barracks, named after the Cavalry Barracks on Beavers Lane to the south, this station opened on 21 July 1884 at the end of a single-track branch of the Hounslow & Metropolitan Railway, which joined the District Railway at Mill Hill Park (now Acton Town). It took its current name on 1 December 1925. The branch was doubled in 1926, and on 5 July 1931 a new building facing Bath Road replaced the original one, which had stood parallel to the tracks. Piccadilly line trains arrived on 13 March 1933, and the District bowed out on 9 October 1964.
The Grade II listed building is by Charles Holden, with Stanley Heaps supervising on site and Basil Ionides designing the ticket hall interior. Its tall ticket hall is heptagonal, a seven-sided theme repeated in the ceiling and in a seven-lamp chandelier, and a disused wooden passimeter booth stands in the middle. When the line was pushed on to Heathrow, the old surface platforms were too skewed for the new route, so replacement platforms below ground level opened on 14 July 1975; the old ones were filled in to make about 400 car parking spaces. A stairlift makes this the only Underground station accessible to manual wheelchair users only.
