About Alperton station
Alperton started life on 28 June 1903 as Perivale-Alperton, a stop on the District Railway’s new extension to South Harrow. Together with the tracks back to Acton Town, that branch was the first section of the Underground’s surface lines to be worked by electric trains rather than steam. The shorter name arrived on 7 October 1910, and on 4 July 1932 the Piccadilly line replaced the District between Ealing Common and South Harrow. Bomb damage on 2 March 1944 cut through services to Uxbridge for five days.
The present building was put up in 1930–31 to Charles Holden’s design, in the same family as his stations at Sudbury Town and Sudbury Hill: a tall, block-like brick ticket hall pierced by clerestory windows and topped with a flat concrete roof, set over a lower range of offices and shops. Alperton once had a real oddity. In 1955 an up escalator was installed to the eastbound platform, a second-hand machine first used at the South Bank exhibition of the Festival of Britain, making this one of only two stations, with Greenford, where an escalator carried passengers up to the trains. It fell out of use in 1988, and its machinery is still in place behind a wall. The station was refurbished in 2006.

Frequently asked questions
In 1955 an up escalator was fitted to the eastbound platform. It had previously been used at the South Bank exhibition of the Festival of Britain. Alperton and Greenford were the only two stations with an escalator going up to the platforms. It stopped working in 1988, and its machine remains behind a wall.
No. When the District Railway opened it on 28 June 1903 it was named Perivale-Alperton. It was renamed simply Alperton on 7 October 1910, more than two decades before the Piccadilly line took over the branch in 1932.
