Queen Elizabeth II opened this station as Heathrow Central on 16 December 1977, completing a 3.5 mi (5.6 km) Piccadilly line extension from Hounslow West approved in 1967 and begun on 27 April 1971 with a groundbreaking by Sir Desmond Plummer. John Mowlem built the final 1.25 miles to the terminals for £2.25m, and with its arrival the Hounslow branch became the Heathrow branch. The name then followed the airport: Heathrow Central Terminals 1, 2, 3 from 3 September 1983, Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3 from 6 October 1986, and Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3 from January 2016, after Terminal 1 closed.

The platforms carry an abstract vitreous enamel mural of Concorde by Tom Eckersley. The present versions date from the 2012 renovation, when a change of tile colour meant the murals were redone in different colourways; around 2018 the originals were donated to collections including the University of West London and the National Museums of Scotland. Six escalators link platforms, ticket hall and surface, with a staff mezzanine between, and a double crossover just east of the station, visible from the platform, lets trains terminate here at the end of the day and during disruption.
