A fourth terminal at Heathrow was approved in 1979, and a Piccadilly line extension to serve it was agreed in October 1981. The British Airports Authority was to build the station box as part of the terminal’s £200 million cost, but with the terminal behind schedule, the station was moved in July 1982 from beneath the building to a nearby car park. Construction began in February 1983; London Regional Transport paid £23 million for 2.5 mi (4.0 km) of new tunnels, the track and the fit-out, and Balfour Beatty completed the work by November 1985.

The Prince and Princess of Wales opened the station on 1 April 1986, shortly before opening the terminal itself, but trains did not stop until 12 April, when flights began. It sits on a one-way loop tunnel between Hatton Cross and Heathrow Terminals 2 & 3, making it one of four Underground stations with only one platform and the only one with one-way service. The loop and station closed on 7 January 2005 while a junction for the new Terminal 5 line was built, reopening on 17 September 2006 with new security and announcement technology.
