Permission came in November 2001, when transport minister Stephen Byers approved the Terminal 5 project after the longest public inquiry ever held in the UK. London Underground was not keen on the site, as no single route could serve all three airport stations, so twin tunnels were built from Terminals 1, 2, 3 to the new terminal, with a pocket track beyond the platforms where trains reverse. The British Airport Authority funded the six-year build; two aircraft stands at Terminal 3 were shut for an access shaft, and the Heathrow Terminal 4 tube station closed for 20 months while the junctions were made. After handover on 18 July 2007 for testing, the station opened with the terminal on 27 March 2008.

Designed by HOK with Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, it lies underground yet its translucent ETFE roof panels let daylight reach both ends of all six platforms. It is the westernmost below-ground station on the Underground and the only Heathrow station where the Piccadilly line, Heathrow Express and, since May 2022, the Elizabeth line share one station, managed and staffed by Heathrow Express.
