About Warren Street station
When the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway was opened on 22 June 1907 by David Lloyd George, then President of the Board of Trade, this Leslie Green station was called Euston Road, a name still visible in the Northern line platform tiling. It became Warren Street on 7 June 1908, after the adjoining street, itself named after the 18th-century naval officer Sir Peter Warren. Charles Holden redesigned the station in the early 1930s, and escalators replaced the original lifts in September 1933.
The Victoria line was not originally meant to stop here; the station was added by 1962 to break a long section between Euston and Oxford Circus. Its platforms opened on 1 December 1968 as a temporary southern terminus, with trains reversing in the southbound platform, and through trains ran from 24 February 1969. The line’s tiles here showed a maze, a play on ‘warren’. After a fire near Oxford Circus on 23 November 1984, Victoria line trains terminated here until 17 December, and the blaze led to a smoking ban below ground. On 27 April 2012 Warren Street became the first Wi-Fi-enabled Underground station.

Frequently asked questions
The station opened on 22 June 1907 as Euston Road and took the name Warren Street on 7 June 1908. The original name can still be seen in the tiling on the Northern line platforms. Warren Street itself is named after the 18th-century naval officer Sir Peter Warren.
Like other Victoria line stations, its platforms were decorated with tiles illustrating the station’s name. At Warren Street the image was a maze, signifying a warren. The tiles belonged to the new complex built when the Victoria line platforms opened on 1 December 1968.
