Goodge Street opened on 22 June 1907 under another name: the Charing Cross, Euston and Hampstead Railway called it Tottenham Court Road. It was renamed on 9 March 1908, ahead of the interchange that joined the separate Northern and Central line stations at today’s Tottenham Court Road. The new name comes from John Goodge, who developed the land in the early 18th century. Leslie Green designed the surface building, and the station is one of the few that still rely on lifts rather than escalators, and still keep separate entrance and exit areas; there is also a 138-step staircase.

Beneath it lies one of eight deep-level Second World War air-raid shelters. From August 1943 it served as an alternative headquarters for the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, used by the US Army Signal Corps as a signals installation. After the war it housed up to 8,000 troops and remained an army transit centre until a fire on 21 May 1956. A later fire in the station, on 21 June 1981, killed a man and injured 16 people and led to a recommendation to ban smoking on the Underground.
