Until 1 November 1909 this was Gower Street, one of the stations the Metropolitan Railway opened on 10 January 1863 on the world’s first underground railway. The line was built by cut and cover directly beneath Euston Road, and the first platforms sat under a brick arch 45 feet wide, lit through ventilation shafts lined with white glazed tiles that opened into the front gardens of houses above. Single-storey pavilions on each side of the road held the entrances. Timber platforms were rebuilt in concrete in 1906 as a fire precaution when the line was electrified.

Between 1929 and 1931 the Metropolitan’s architect C. W. Clark rebuilt the station: Euston Road was closed so the platforms could be lengthened, the brick arch gave way to a flat roof on steel beams, and a bridge over the tracks allowed a single ticket office. The south entrance was rebuilt after wartime bombing and again in the 21st century; since late 2006 it has been part of the corner of the Wellcome Trust headquarters, entered from Gower Street, with a subway under Euston Road from the north side. Two lifts have linked the main entrance with the westbound platform since 2011.
