Portland Road was the name this station carried when it opened on 10 January 1863, one of the stops on the Metropolitan Railway between Bishop’s Road and Farringdon Street, the world’s first underground railway. It became Great Portland Street on 1 March 1917, was Great Portland Street & Regent’s Park from 1923, and went back to Great Portland Street in 1933.

The present building dates from 1930 and stands on a traffic island in Marylebone Road where it meets Great Portland Street and Albany Street. C. W. Clark, the Metropolitan’s architect, gave it a steel frame clad in cream terracotta, with shops around the perimeter, offices above and, originally, a car showroom: the area was then a major sales location for the motor industry. The building was Grade II listed in January 1987.
