The original parliamentary powers for the Baker Street and Waterloo Railway did not allow a station here at all. Permission to add one to the partly built line came in 1904, and Regent’s Park opened on 10 March 1906. Unusually for the company, it has no surface building: passengers enter from a subway in Park Crescent and go down by lift or by a staircase of 96 steps. Digging the ticket hall meant excavating a box-shaped void beneath the garden above, which caused significant subsidence, and the large metal beams in the ticket hall are the result.

The station came close to closure in 1983, when London Transport proposed shutting it rather than spend more than £3 million replacing lifts that were by then 77 years old. The plan was dropped after the GLC asked for it to be reconsidered. The lifts and other parts of the station were later refurbished during a closure from 10 July 2006 to 14 June 2007. On the Bakerloo line it sits between Baker Street and Oxford Circus.

Frequently asked questions

Great Portland Street, on the Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines, is about 190 metres east along Marylebone Road. It is a walk between two separate stations, and out-of-station interchange fares do not apply, so the two journeys are charged separately.

Unlike most Baker Street and Waterloo Railway stations, Regent’s Park was built with its ticket hall underground, reached from a subway in Park Crescent. Excavating the hall beneath the garden above caused significant subsidence, which is why large metal beams are visible in the ticket hall.
