No station existed here when the direct Barking–Pitsea line was built through the site between 1885 and 1888. Heathway was an infill station, opened by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway on 12 September 1932 on its new electrified local tracks, to meet demand from the London County Council’s interwar Becontree estate; the site had been identified in 1920. Though run by the LMS, it was served almost exclusively by District trains. Dagenham Council pushed for a renaming to Dagenham Central, and on 1 May 1949 it became Dagenham Heathway.

William Henry Hamlyn’s single-storey brick building sits on the bridge, linked to a central island platform by a long sloping walkway. The platforms are 700 feet (210 m) long, though only 400 feet (120 m) are in use, under a single canopy. The facade lost its symmetry in the 1970s, when 50 feet (15 m) of the building was removed to accommodate an adjacent building. The layout is almost the twin of Upney, opened the same day, although Heathway’s platform buildings are longer. Ownership passed to London Underground on 1 January 1969.

Frequently asked questions

The station is named after the town of Dagenham and the Heathway, the principal shopping street it stands on. It opened in 1932 as plain Heathway; Dagenham Council pushed for ‘Dagenham Central’, and on 1 May 1949 it was renamed Dagenham Heathway instead.
The 1932 station building was originally symmetrical, but in the 1970s 50 feet (15 m) of it was removed to make room for an adjacent building, destroying the symmetry of the facade. The rest of William Henry Hamlyn’s design, including the walkway down to the island platform, survives.
Dagenham Heathway is served by the District line only.
