The London, Tilbury and Southend Railway opened a station here called Dagenham in 1885, on its new direct route from Fenchurch Street to Southend that avoided Tilbury; nothing remains of George Hopkins’s original buildings. District Railway trains first called on 2 June 1902, when the Whitechapel and Bow Railway allowed them through to Upminster, but they were cut back to East Ham with electrification in 1905. They returned in 1932, when the London, Midland and Scottish Railway extended electrified tracks to Upminster and rebuilt the station with two extra platforms.

That rebuild, by LMS architect William Henry Hamlyn, borrowed from Underground architecture and resembles Becontree and Hornchurch: a Fletton-brick ticket office above the platforms facing Rainham Road, reached by a covered footbridge stairway, with 1932 canopies below. The station took its current name in 1949. Fenchurch Street–Southend trains stopped calling on 14 June 1962, leaving disused platforms on the southern pair of tracks, and London Underground took ownership on 1 January 1969. A bay platform, numbered 3, lies north of the running lines.
