Tracks came first: the Great Western and Great Central Joint Railway began running trains through here on 2 April 1906, with no stop at Ruislip Gardens. A main line station followed on 9 July 1934. The 1935–40 New Works Programme then pushed the Central line west from a new junction beyond North Acton, originally aiming for Denham. The Second World War and the creation of the Metropolitan Green Belt cut the scheme back to West Ruislip, and Central line trains reached Ruislip Gardens on 29 November 1948.

For a decade the two railways shared the stop, until main line trains ceased calling on 21 July 1958, leaving the Underground on its own. Until recently the entrance to a passenger stairwell could still be seen on the London-bound side of the Chiltern tracks. The Central line depot lies to the west, south of the running lines, so some trains start or finish at Ruislip Gardens rather than West Ruislip as they move in and out of it, and a shunting neck links the depot to the Metropolitan line just west of Ruislip for stock transfers.
