About South Ruislip station
Long before the Tube reached it, this spot on the GWR/GCR Joint line was called Northolt Junction, after the junction just to the east where routes from Paddington and Marylebone met. The station opened under that name on 1 May 1908, became South Ruislip & Northolt Junction in September 1932 and took its present name on 30 June 1947. Central line trains, delayed by the Second World War, began calling on 23 November 1948 as the extension towards West Ruislip was completed.
Brian Lewis and F.F.C. Curtis designed the station, but its rounded booking hall was not finished until 1960. Inside, a frieze of concrete, glass and granite chips is one of the earliest public works by the glass artist Henry Haig. The rail side has been reworked repeatedly: the manual signal box went in early 1990, with signalling now controlled from Marylebone, and Chiltern Railways’ Evergreen 3 works remodelled Northolt Junction so that through trains can run at up to 100 mph while stopping services use a loop. Outside, the railway bridge over Long Drive is only 11 feet 9 inches (3.58 m) high and is often struck by tall vehicles, so false deck beams protect it on either side.
