The first railway stop here was North Acton Halt, opened in 1904 on the Great Central and Great Western’s joint New North Main Line and closed by 1913. The present station was built and owned by the Great Western Railway on its Ealing & Shepherd’s Bush Railway, over which Central London Railway trains had run since 3 August 1920. It opened on 5 November 1923, the same day as West Acton, a short distance east of the old halt.

In 1947 the Central line was extended on new track from North Acton to Greenford, and the main line platforms alongside closed; only the outermost of them remains, partly intact. The neighbouring Great Western line was progressively run down and reduced to single track past the station in 1993. Until 1992 the Underground station had only two platforms. A third was then built on the old freight trackbed to form an island, and the middle platform was resignalled so that trains can start and terminate here. This allows shuttles to run to White City from Ealing Broadway and West Ruislip when there are problems elsewhere on the line, and some trains from central London are scheduled to end at North Acton.

Frequently asked questions

Until 1992 there were only two. For operational flexibility a third platform was built to the north, on the old freight line trackbed, creating an island, and the middle platform was resignalled for terminating and starting trains. This allows shuttle services to White City from Ealing Broadway and West Ruislip during disruption.
