East Acton owes its existence to a Great Western Railway scheme. The Ealing & Shepherd’s Bush Railway, approved in 1905, was to link the GWR main line at Ealing Broadway with the West London Railway; in 1911 the Central London Railway, now part of the Central line, agreed running powers over it, and parliament approved a short connection from Wood Lane on 18 August 1911. Electrification waited until after the First World War, and when CLR trains began running on 3 August 1920 East Acton was the only intermediate station. Two dedicated freight tracks opened in 1938 and closed in 1964; their overgrown trackbed is visible immediately north of the station.

Metronet refurbished the station in 2007. In August 2021 work began to rebuild the eastbound platform, during which eastbound and Night Tube trains did not stop. Planned to last five months, the job grew when structural elements were found to need full replacement rather than repair, and the platforms did not reopen until 19 September 2022.
