Debden began life on 24 April 1865 as Chigwell Road, a Great Eastern Railway station on the Loughton branch’s extension to Epping and Ongar. By 1 December 1865 it had become Chigwell Lane, and for its first years it was a single-platform halt. It was the setting for the Victorian ballad The Chigwell Stationmaster’s Wife – Chigwell station itself did not open until 1903. Wartime economies closed it from 22 May 1916 to 3 February 1919.

The New Works Programme of 1935–1940 assigned the branch to the Central line; work begun in 1938 stopped in 1939 and only resumed in 1946. Electric trains replaced British Railways steam services on 25 September 1949, and the station was renamed Debden from the handover. It still acts as an intermediate terminus: some peak trains from central London end here and reverse in a turnback siding east of the station, though fewer do so now that the Epping service has improved. Most of the eastbound platform buildings date from a 1974 reconstruction, but the original stationmaster’s house survives beside the ticket office.

Frequently asked questions

The station opened on 24 April 1865 as Chigwell Road and was renamed Chigwell Lane on 1 December that year. It kept that name through Great Eastern and LNER days until Central line trains took over on 25 September 1949, when it became Debden.
Debden works as an intermediate terminus. A number of peak-hours trains from central London end here instead of continuing to Epping, using a turnback siding east of the station to reverse into the westbound platform. Once there were two sidings and most trains terminated here, but the improved Epping service has reduced that.
Debden is served by the Central line only.
Debden is in Zone 6 of the London fare zones. Fares by Oyster or contactless depend on the zones you travel through and on whether you travel at peak time.
On weekdays the first train from Debden leaves at about 04:58 and the last at about 01:26, depending on line and direction (TfL timetable). Sunday services start later. The table above lists every line and direction.
A single pay-as-you-go journey with Oyster or contactless from Debden to Oxford Circus (Zone 1) costs £4.00 off-peak or £5.90 at peak times; a paper single ticket costs £7.00. These are TfL’s adult fares for 2026, in force since 1 March 2026.
