The Great Eastern Railway opened this village station on 24 April 1865 as an intermediate stop on its extension from Loughton to Ongar. It was called simply “Theydon” at first, and took its present name in December of that same year. The line passed to the LNER in 1923, and in steam days milk trains to Liverpool Street were a regular part of the timetable, until the underpass from Leyton to Stratford was built.

The 1935–1940 New Works Programme transferred the branch to London Underground as part of the Central line‘s eastern extension, and Tube trains began serving Theydon Bois on 25 September 1949. It was later one of the first stations on the network to operate without a staffed ticket office. In 2015, a local group’s campaign forced a proposed 80-space commuter car park on land next to the station to seek planning permission before it could be built.
