Steam trains of the Great Eastern Railway were the first to call here, from 1 May 1903, on the Woodford-to-Ilford route known as the Fairlop Loop. After the 1923 grouping the line passed to the London & North Eastern Railway, and the 1935–1940 New Works Programme earmarked it for the Central line. Chigwell closed on 29 November 1947 and reopened to electric Underground trains on 21 November 1948.

Its stretch of the Hainault Loop has an unusual past. From the mid-1960s until the early 1990s the Woodford–Hainault section ran largely apart from the rest of the line, with four-car (later three-car) trains of 1960 Stock adapted for Automatic Train Operation; it became the testing ground for the system later used on the Victoria line, and some 1967 Stock trains ran here as FACT, the “Fully Automatic Controlled Train”. Through trains to central London now run via Hainault. The station was refurbished in 2006, the same year evening service on the branch was extended to midnight.
