The Great Eastern Railway opened Grange Hill on 1 May 1903 on its Fairlop Loop between Woodford and Ilford, with a building very similar to the one that survives largely untouched at Chigwell. That original building did not last: a German V1 flying bomb destroyed it in July 1944. The station closed on 29 November 1947 while the line was electrified, and reopened as a Central line station on 21 November 1948 with a rebuilt ticket office.

From the mid-1960s to the early 1990s the Woodford to Hainault section ran largely separately from the rest of the Central line, using short trains of 1960 Stock adapted for Automatic Train Operation; the section became the testing ground for the system later used on the Victoria line. Through trains to central London have since returned. Since 5 February 2006 Grange Hill has had no staffed ticket office.
