District Railway trains first called at South Ealing on 1 May 1883, hauled by steam until the line was electrified in 1905. The Piccadilly line has served the station since 9 January 1933, and the two lines shared it until the District service was withdrawn in 1964, leaving the Piccadilly as the only line here, on its Heathrow branch.

The station has been rebuilt more than once. A modernisation in 1935–1936 replaced the original buildings, gave the eastbound platform a new concrete canopy and waiting room, and installed electric lighting. The station building was replaced again in 1983 and refurbished once more in 2006. Like every other Underground station, it has one of Mark Wallinger’s Labyrinth artworks, in place since 2013.
