Leslie Green designed Holloway Road for the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway, which opened it on 15 December 1906, in the Modern Style, a British form of Art Nouveau; the building is Grade II listed. It had been proposed under the name Holloway before opening, and it stands next to the site of the former Holloway and Caledonian Road railway station.

Two lift shafts were built, but only one was ever used for lifts. The other held an experimental spiral escalator built by Jesse W. Reno, the American inventor of escalators; the experiment failed and it never carried the public. In the 1990s remains of the machinery were dug out from the base of the shaft and stored at the London Transport Museum Depot in Acton, and from the platforms a disused second exit is still visible, leading to the back of the working lift shaft. Refurbishment completed in 2008 brought a new public address system, new information screens, better lighting and many more CCTV cameras, and work to replace the two 1980s lifts began in May 2023.

Frequently asked questions

One of the station’s two lift shafts was used for an experimental spiral escalator built by Jesse W. Reno, the American inventor of escalators. It was unsuccessful and never opened to the public. Its remains were excavated from the bottom of the shaft in the 1990s and are kept at the London Transport Museum Depot in Acton.
£5m was due to be spent expanding the station as part of the stadium’s planning permission. Later studies showed that coping with match-day crowds would mean replacing the lifts with escalators at a cost of £60m, so the redevelopment plans were put on hold.
