Tooting Broadway was born of a deal. In 1922 the Underground group planned to take the City and South London Railway south from Clapham Common and link it with a new Wimbledon and Sutton line; the Southern Railway objected, fearing the loss of passengers to a more direct route into London. A July 1923 agreement let the tube run as far as Morden in return for giving up the Sutton scheme, and Tooting Broadway opened on 13 September 1926. Charles Holden’s Grade II listed building occupies a corner lot, fronted by a double-height curving screen faced in white Portland stone with shops on either side and a large roundel in the central glazed panel.

South of the platforms a reversing siding between the running tunnels lets trains turn back short of Morden, and it has a grim history: on 6 October 1960 a train hit the end wall, seriously injuring the driver, and on 4 May 1971 another struck it at around 30 mph, killing the driver. Bigger plans never came. A 1946 report named the Morden branch the most overcrowded part of the Underground and proposed second tunnels from here to Kennington, but the idea was not taken forward, and a Crossrail 2 station considered here was dropped in October 2015 for a Balham route because of difficult soil.
